Institute of Physical Geodesy (IPGD)

Welcome to the Institute of Physical Geodesy (IPGD) at Technische Universität Darmstadt.

The IPGD is engaged in research and study courses with respect to the global aspects of Geodesy and measurements of the Earth for the determination of reference systems and precise positioning, e.g. to measure deformations, on the whole scale range. Satellite methods are applied to positioning with Global Satellite Navigation Systems (GNSS), to the determination of the Earth's gravity field with laser und gradiomety satellites, as well as with altimetry satellites for the determination of sea level changes and height changes on land.

Study courses

The main courses of IPGD in the study courses B.Sc. Civil Engineering and Geodesy as well as M.Sc. Geodesy and Geoinformation are Physical Geodesy, Reference Systems and Satellite Geodesy. Beside them the institute is incumbent on lectures and exercises in Adjustment Calculation, Parameter Estimation and Signal Processing in their respective context to Geodesy.

Research

The IPGD is mainly active in the following research fields:

  • Physicali Geodesy
    • Gravimetry
    • Geoid Computation
    • Mass Transport in System Earth
  • Satellite Geodesy
    • Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS)
    • Satellite Altimetry
    • Celestial Mechanics
  • Inertial Geodesy and Navigation
    • Inertial Navigation (and Measuring) Systems (INS)
